This book presents a concise history of the Kannada language. Rather than relying solely on ancient Kannada inscriptions and literature, it draws on comparative studies between Kannada and other Dravidian languages — Tamil, Telugu, Gondi, and Kurukh — to reconstruct Kannada’s history.

The book traces Kannada’s evolution from Proto-Dravidian, a hypothesized ancestor language that preceded the divergence of the modern Dravidian languages. It also describes how the various present-day dialects of Kannada evolved from Proto-Kannada — itself an intermediate stage between Proto-Dravidian and modern Kannada.

This book was prepared by further editing Bhat’s 1979 work Kannaḍa Bhāṣeya Sankshipta Charitre (Concise History of the Kannada Language). It also incorporates content from his 2007 book Kannaḍa Nuḍi Naḍedu Banda Dāri (Book 17 in this catalogue).
