Language of Learning and Language-Learning
ಕಲಿಕೆನುಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ನುಡಿಕಲಿಕೆ
Author: D. N. Shankara Bhat (ಡಿ. ಎನ್. ಶಂಕರ ಬಟ್) Read by: Malati Bhat Published: 2019 · 104 pages Source quality: ⚠️ Mostly garbled live-lecture auto-captions; no prose recoverable from transcripts Transcript: youtube/kn/full.md
Source Limitations: The overview below is drawn primarily from the book’s website description (
description-raw.mdfrom the Wayback Machine archive of dnshankarabhat.net). The 21-part YouTube transcript series (Parts P1, P2, 1–19) is essentially unusable: 9 parts are completely unavailable, and the remaining parts are garbled auto-captions mixing Hindi fragments, random proper nouns, and mis-identified audio. No sustained prose from the book can be recovered from the transcripts. Only scattered keyword signals (ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ, ಜಪಾನ್/ಚೀನ/ಕೊರಿಯಾ) confirm the general topic. Content marked “from transcript” below represents keyword inference only, not recovered text.
Overview
(From book description — dnshankarabhat.net)
This short book explains two related things: how children learn their first language, and how — with support from their first language — they can learn one or two additional languages. It also explains how children can be taught to speak, read, and write in the shared Kannada used in schools, which differs somewhat from a child’s home dialect.
Children can learn a second language like English more easily by using their first language as a stepping stone. If that stepping stone is taken away — if children are taught directly through English without first-language support — most children will not progress properly in their learning.
Research has shown that teaching mathematics, science, and other subjects requires five to six years of learning a new medium language (such as English) before children can function in it for content learning. The child’s own first language is therefore the most appropriate medium of instruction; using an unfamiliar language as the teaching medium is a serious obstacle to learning.

Key Concepts (from book description)
- ಕಲಿಕೆನುಡಿ (kalikenuDi): the language used as the medium of instruction (“learning-language”) — what schools teach through
- ನುಡಿಕಲಿಕೆ (nuDikalike): learning a language as a subject — what schools teach about
- Children learn their first language naturally; learning a second language works best when the first language acts as a scaffold
- Mother-tongue medium instruction is not merely cultural preference — it is cognitive necessity for genuine learning in subjects like mathematics and science
- Children need five to six years to reach functional proficiency in a new-language medium — English-medium schooling imposed early is educationally harmful
- The title is a deliberate inversion of the same two words, signaling the book’s two-part structure
