ಒಳನೋಟ — Key Notes

  • Invariant finite form: unlike every other Kannada verb, ಇಲ್ಲ shows no person-number-gender agreement. ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲ / ಅವನು ಇಲ್ಲ / ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲ — all identical. This is unique in the paradigm.
  • Suppletive relationship with ಇರು: ಇಲ್ಲ supplies the negative non-finite forms that ಇರು lacks. But Bhat treats them as separate words — historically from different Proto-Dravidian roots (*ir- vs *cil-).
  • ಇರದ exception: ಇರು retains one negative participial of its own — ಇರದ (*irada*) — used in constructions like ಮಾಡಿರದ ಕೆಲಸ (work not done). Only this one form; the other three go to ಇಲ್ಲ.
  • As ಇರು's negative counterpart: in the iru-illa suppletive system, ಇಲ್ಲ's 4 non-finite forms + ಇರದ = the full set of negative non-finite forms for the "be/not-be" system, complementing ಇರು's 10 ನಡುರೂಪ.
